For many South Africans in Canada, the festive season can be a tough time. Whether it’s Christmas, New Year’s, or any other major holiday, being far from family, familiar traditions, and the summer sun can leave a person feeling a bit lost. The Holiday Host Connections program, run by the South African Institute of Canada (SAIC), is here to help Saffas connect with others in their area, making the holidays a little less lonely and a lot more lekker.
The idea is simple: some people have space at their table, and others need a seat. Through this program, SAIC matches South Africans who are alone or new to Canada with host families or individuals willing to open their homes, share a meal, or simply meet up for a cup of coffee. Whether it’s a proper Christmas feast, a casual kuier, or a bring-and-braai, Holiday Host Connections helps create meaningful friendships and a sense of community during the loneliest time of the year.
How It Works
- Hosts sign up – South Africans across Canada who are willing to meet up or host a small gathering register with SAIC.
- Guests sign up – Anyone feeling alone over the holiday period can sign up to be matched with a host in their area.
- We connect people – SAIC facilitates introductions based on location, preferences, and availability.
- Friendships are made – Whether it’s a festive meal, a coffee, or just a lekker gesels, connections are built that last beyond the holiday season.
The program was first launched in December 2024 in Vancouver, where it quickly proved to be a huge success. Many participants formed long-lasting friendships, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. As a result, SAIC is committed to rolling out Holiday Host Connections across Canada, helping more South Africans find their people and make the festive season something to look forward to again.
Why It Matters
Many South Africans moving to Canada don’t have immediate family or a large support network here. Holidays can be a tough time, and something as simple as sharing a meal, finding a familiar accent, or just having a lekker chat can make a massive difference. This program isn’t just about the holidays—it’s about building a strong South African community in Canada, one connection at a time.
